What is the Mexican passport?

The Mexican passport is the identity and travel document issued by the Government of Mexico through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). It is the only valid document to officially identify yourself as a Mexican citizen abroad and required to cross international borders.

For Mexicans in the USA, the passport also serves as official ID to open bank accounts, apply for driver licenses and carry out consular procedures.

Ordinary Passport

For Mexican citizens in general. The most common, processed at consulates.

Requirements to apply for a passport

1 Mexican birth certificate (original or certified copy)

2 Printed CURP (downloadable at gob.mx/curp)

3 Valid official ID: INE, consular ID, previous passport or driver license

4 Proof of fee payment (processed at the consulate)

5 Prior appointment at the nearest Mexican consulate

6 For renewals: previous passport (even if expired)

7 For loss or theft: police report or loss declaration

Steps to get your passport

Schedule appointment

Go to mexitel.com or cita.sre.gob.mx and book at the nearest consulate.

Gather documents

Collect all required original documents. Verify they are not expired or damaged.

Make payment

Cost is paid at the consulate. Bring cash or check accepted payment methods.

Attend appointment

Arrive on time with all documents. They will take your photo and biometric data.

Wait for delivery

Passport is processed in 10 to 15 business days. Can be picked up at the consulate or sent by certified mail.
