Available Assistance Programs

Many immigrants are unaware of available assistance programs. Some are accessible regardless of immigration status. Trámites MX USA guides you at no cost.

Types of Available Aid

  • Food assistance (SNAP/WIC) — Families with US citizen children may qualify regardless of parents immigration status.
  • Medicaid / CHIP — Medical care for children, pregnant women, and people under certain special categories.
  • Emergency housing — Shelters and rent assistance programs for families in crisis situations.
  • Free legal assistance — For deportation cases, removal orders, asylum, and representation before immigration courts.
  • Mental health services — Confidential psychological support for immigrants and refugees who have experienced trauma.
  • Integration programs — English classes (ESL), job orientation, adult education, and social services.

Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

The ETD allows permanent residents, refugees, and persons with certain visas to travel outside the US when they do not have a valid passport or when obtaining one would represent a danger.

Special Protection Programs

VAWA — Violence Against Women Act

VAWA allows victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking to self-petition for permanent residence independently, without the abuser sponsoring the petition.

Visa U — For Crime Victims

The U Visa is for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse. It allows remaining in the US and working. After 3 years, it can lead to permanent residence.

Visa T — For Human Trafficking Victims

The T Visa protects victims of labor or sex trafficking who have cooperated with authorities. It includes access to federal benefits and can lead to permanent residence.

Driver's Licenses

Many US states allow obtaining driver's licenses using valid Mexican documents. Requirements vary by state.

States where you can use Mexican documents
California (AB 60), Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, Washington, Utah, Connecticut, Maryland, Vermont, New Mexico, Oregon, Delaware, Hawaii, among others. All accept consular ID and/or Mexican passport.

Generally required documents: consular ID or Mexican passport, ITIN number (in some states), proof of address in the USA, social security number (if applicable).

Civil Registry from the USA

The Civil Registry includes birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates. All these documents can be requested from the USA through the consulate or online at registrocivil.gob.mx.

Marriage Certificate: available online if registered in Mexico. If married in the USA and want to validate in Mexico, requires apostille and certified translation.
